چکیده

Ž .Linear alkylbenzene sulphonates LAS are a group of anionic surfactants, characterised by having both ahydrophobic and a hydrophilic group. LAS is one of the major ingredients of synthetic detergents and surfactants andis used world-wide for both domestic and industrial applications. LAS is relatively rapidly aerobically degraded, butonly very slowly or not at all degraded under anaerobic conditions. Therefore, LAS can be found in very highconcentrations in most sewage sludge and enter the soil compartment as a result of sludge application. LAS can befound in elevated concentrations in soil immediately after sludge amendment, but a half-life of approximately 1 3weeks will generally prevent accumulation in soil and biota. The concentration in soils that have not received sewagesludge recently, is generally less than 1 mg kg 1 and not more than 5 mg LAS kg 1. This is below the lowestconcentration of LAS where effects have been observed in the laboratory. The laboratory data is in accordance withfield studies using aqueous solutions of the sodium salt of LAS. However, observations of the ecological impact ofsewage sludge applications or application of LAS spiked into sludge indicates a lower toxicity of LAS when applied insludge. On the basis of the information reviewed in this paper, it is concluded that LAS can be found in highconcentrations in sewage sludge, but that the relatively rapid aerobic degradation and the reduced bioavailabilitywhen applied via sludge, most likely will prevent LAS from posing a threat to terrestrial ecosystems on a long termbasis. 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. A risk-based methodology for deriving quality standards for organic contaminants in sewage sludge for use in agriculture--Conceptual Framework.

This paper describes a systematic methodology (Conceptual Framework) to derive quality standards for organic (anthropogenic) contaminants in sewage sludge added to agricultural land, in the context of revision of EU Sludge Directive 86/278/EEC and the broader Soil Thematic Strategy. The overall objective is to ensure, based on a risk assessment approach, a sustainable use of sludge over a long ...

Organic contaminants in sewage sludge (biosolids) and their significance for agricultural recycling.

Organic chemicals discharged in urban wastewater from industrial and domestic sources, or those entering through atmospheric deposition onto paved areas via surface run-off, are predominantly lipophilic in nature and therefore become concentrated in sewage sludge, with potential implications for the agricultural use of sludge as a soil improver. Biodegradation occurs to varying degrees during w...

Analysis of Organic and Inorganic Contaminants in Dried Sewage Sludge and By-Products of Dried Sewage Sludge Gasification

Organic and inorganic contaminants in sewage sludge may cause their presence also in the by-products formed during gasification processes. Thus, this paper presents multidirectional chemical instrumental activation analyses of dried sewage sludge as well as both solid (ash, char coal) and liquid (tar) by-products formed during sewage gasification in a fixed bed reactor which was carried out to ...

Characterization of an Industrial Sewage Sludge and Its Evaluation for Land Application

Background: Sewage treatment leads to the production of large amount of sludge, containing organic matter and nutrients and considering requirements for recycling could be used as fertilizer. The sludge may also contain various pollutants that pose serious harm to human health and the environment. This study aimed at characterizing the industrial sewage sludge and evaluating its capability as f...
